The 75th Annual ASA National Council Meeting started on Saturday November 4th with registration. This year?s convention is at the Sheraton Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Later that day, our annual trade show opened at 6:00pm. A record number of booths are available for council members to peruse. There are bat and ball Manufacturers, tournament bidders, internet based softball groups, trophy sales, Bollinger Insurance representatives and much more. Sunday will begin with a general council meeting where all 240 + voting delegates meet to go over guidelines for the week long gathering and hear a report from our Executive Director. ---------------------------------------------- RON RADIGONDA, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ---------------------------------------------- Ron Radigonda, Executive Director of ASA opened the general session of all council members on Sunday, November 7 at a 1:00pm. The United States Air Force (the Air Force Academy is located in Colorado Springs) presented the colors for our National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Ron opened by remembering council members that had passed away during the year. Local associations could then mention deceased members of their groups from the previous year. Briefly, some of Ron's presentation is below: 1. Individual registrations were at 280,000 in 2006 with over 300,000 projected for 2007. 2. Expenses were controlled because of numerous factors. Legal costs decreased by 75%. Communication from "snail mail" to the use of the net cut expenditures. 3. Utilization of the Oklahoma City stadium.
4. Bat and Ball licensing are a solid revenue stream. ---------------------------------------------- STEVE MONSON, PRESIDENT ---------------------------------------------- Association Review: Past reviews were done because of performance issues in a particular area. Future reviews will take in all 85 associations. Each association will do a self-study. The membership committee will handle reviews. The self-study will be done once a year. It is design to be a regular check of your association. It will be weighted to emphasize certain factors: Registrations - 30% Code Requirements - 20% Championship Programs - 20% Association Structure - 20% and Association program - 10%. Background Checks: John Spiotta of Bollinger Insurance and Ron Radigonda are working on a program. Little League baseball is making background checks mandatory. Coaches, managers, concession workers, maintenance crews and umpires are all possibilities of those that will be required to have the check done. Coaches and managers are at the top of the list because of the one-on-one contact with children. The background check is complicated. Decisions need to be made on what is labeled "red light" or "green light" as far as what the offenses were. Red light, of course, being unacceptable and "green light" being no threatening. For example: a person that "mooned" or "streaked" as a fad in college, is labeled a sex offender in some states. Additionally, research for Charles Jones vs. Charlie Jones could cause a potential problem. Lastly, a stolen social security number could again cause the incorrect person to be banned. A person could have committed an offense in one state, yet moved to another state to coach. The ASA is looking at a national background check, one that is affordable and built into the team/individual registration process. A projected date for the implementation would be the 2008 season. It is very possible that in 2007 a product will be tested. ---------------------------------------------- PRESIDENT, PRESIDENT-ELECT, and BOARD OF DIRECTORS ---------------------------------------------- ASA elects new Board of Directors Colorado Springs, Colo.,----Members of the ASA National Council met on Sunday night with their respective territories to select representatives to serve on the new Board of Directors for the Amateur Softball Association.
