![]() A successful 2009 season concluded with the ASA National Convention in Reno, Nevada in November and the Francis Mott Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Binghamton, NY with 10 inductees being enshrined into the Hall of Fame in October. We were extremely proud to welcome ASA President; Joey Rich as our speaker at the Hall of Fame event. New York State ASA had a decrease in team and umpire registration for 2009. This decrease did not affect the play of our teams. We had numerous teams attend National Tournaments, Eastern Nationals and National Invitationals. Our "order of finish" improves each season as well. At least one of our teams have finished 1st in an Eastern National and others have been in the top 5 in almost all of the others tournaments. The first year of individual registrations for Junior Olympic teams went very well for New York State ASA. To date, the 2010 process has been much more difficult and time consuming. The ASA National Office Staff is working hard to correct many of the "glitches" in the system but as of February 1, there is more to do. I am sure that once you have gone through the process, the following season will be much easier. If for nothing else, I am told that birth certificates will not be required in future season if you have already submitted one and it has been approved! Team and individual registration costs will stay the same for the 2010 season and continue to stay lower than every comparable team sport. The ASA Council, which is made up of commissioners, player representatives and umpires make the decisions influencing the game of ASA Softball. They (we) have done a responsible job to keep it cost effective for maximum participation of all. With pressure to meet demanding cost increases of supplies, communication, staff, etc, the ASA Council has made cuts in other areas, not affecting the quality of the game. It is my hope that 2010 will bring an increase in team participation throughout the state. The opportunities for participation are increasing with the continued number of invitational events being offered in every area, at all levels. While success and teaching are what we strive for, please make health and safety as equally important issues for all. Sincerely, Robert Farrell, Commissioner New York State ASA | Return Home | Commissoner's Desk | Officers & Commissioners | Umpires | Awards & Hall of Fame | Tournament Information | Great Links | Photos | Contact Us | |
