Under a restructuring plan recently approved by the ASA Board of Directors, the ASA will not fill the vacated position in the national office. Instead the ASA will be accepting applications for 4-5 new National Deputy Director of Umpires who will all be reporting to Craig Cress, ASA’s Director of Membership Services. A job description and application procedures for these new positions will be posted in the next 7-10 business days. “While we are disappointed that Kevin Ryan has made a decision to leave our national headquarters staff in Oklahoma City, we feel the new direction adopted by our board will enable ASA to grow the number of umpires in the United States and increase our quality of national training,” said Ron Radigonda, ASA’s Executive Director. “Kevin provided outstanding leadership during his short tenure and we are optimistic that he will want to remain part of our future plans.” The Amateur Softball Association, founded in 1933, is the National Governing Body of amateur softball in the United States and a member of the United States Olympic Committee. As the National Governing Body, the ASA is responsible for identifying, selecting and training male and female athletes to compete in World, Pan American and Olympic competitions. It is also responsible for promoting and growing the sport of softball across the country. ----------------------------------------------- MODIFIED FAST PITCH COMMITTEE ----------------------------------------------- As was discussed at our fall meeting, a Modified Pitch Committee will be formed. Our plan is to get the committee set with 4-10 members. Once formed, the committee will select a chair person. Please let me know if you would like to serve on this committee. If you know of someone else that might be interested in serving on the committee, please let me know. At this point, I would like those I appoint to the committee to be New York State ASA Council members. ----------------------------------------------- OLYMPIANS SELECTED FOR HALL OF FAME ----------------------------------------------- Four players who were integral in the success of the USA Softball Women’s National Team during the past two decades, including capturing the first Olympic gold medal in the sport of softball, headline the list of people chosen for enshrinement into the ASA National Softball Hall of Fame in 2006. The season is over - while everything is still fresh in your mind, why not take care of it now. Thanks for your anticipated cooperation. D5Softball@aol.com - Bill ----------------------------------------------- 2007 ASA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS ----------------------------------------------- Tucson, AZ---Cities from almost every state in the country converged on the JW Marriott in Tucson, Ariz., this week to make their pitch to the ASA National Council in order to secure one of the many ASA National Championship Finals in 2007. ASA National Championship Finals are the most coveted softball championships in the country and are awarded each year during the ASA Annual National Council Meeting. Over 100 ASA Nationals Championships were awarded this year to over 50 different cities for the 2007 season. Sites were also selected for the 2006 ASA Girl’s Class A Fast Pitch Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern National Championships. A complete breakdown of the championships awarded during the meeting is listed below. A complete list of all ASA Championships can be found by logging on to the ASA website at www.asasoftball.com. ----------------------------------------------- 2006 RULE BOOKS ----------------------------------------------- The ASA Board of Directors reemphasized its policy on the ordering of ASA Rule Books for 2006. Each Local Association is allotted team and umpire edition rule books that meet their 2005 registration numbers plus 10%. Any Local Association that orders excess books and does not meet the quota established by their 2005 registrations in 2006 will be assessed a $2.00 per book charge in January 2007. Commissioners, please let me know if your 2006 rule book order should be less than I ordered for you in 2005. If I do not hear from you, I will order the same amount of rule books as your registration total for 2005. As you can see, it could become costly to our association if we are not more careful with out orders. ----------------------------------------------- Products, Services, Downloads ----------------------------------------------- http://www.digitalscout.com/ http://www.ussportscamps.com/ http://www.xpapparel.com/ ----------------------------------------------- JO INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATIONS – BOLLINGER INSURANCE ----------------------------------------------- We have been informed by Bollinger that the JO Individual Registration insurance charge for Managers, Coaches, etc., previously announced at the Council Meeting has been changed and will not go into effect until 2007 There will be no insurance fees for Managers, Coaches, etc., for the 2006 plan year. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium, was recently selected for the 2005 Sports Turf Managers Association Collegiate Softball Field of the Year Award. It is the first-time honor for ASA and second for ASA Sports Turf Superintendent, Rick Newville, who received the 2002 award for C. Moore Field in Oklahoma City in the high school and parks and rec. division. Entries were evaluated by a panel of five judges scoring each entry based on the playability and appearance of the playing surfaces, innovative solutions employed effective use of budget, and the development and implementation of a comprehensive, sound agronomic program. The STMA also gives awards in baseball, football, soccer and complex. “The Field of the Year Award validates the great work of our members,” says Kim Heck, CEO of the Sports Turf Managers Association, the sponsoring organization of the award. “This honor is one of only a handful that the association awards to recognize quality sports field management. Rick Newville’s experience and expertise is definitely reflected in the award-winning playing conditions of ASA Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium.” Although Newville has only been with ASA a year, he has been a leader in turf management for many years. He is the only award winner to receive two softball field awards in the history of the 13 year award and also won the 2001 baseball field of the year. “It is quite an honor to have our field selected as the Sports Turf Managers Association’s 2005 National College Field of the Year. Our efforts have been aided by an organization that understands the importance of athletic field management. The Amateur Softball Association is a great organization to be a part of,“ said Newville. USA Head Coach Mike Candrea had the opportunity to meet Newville when he was Turf Manager/Field Crew Supervisor for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. Candrea noticed an immediate difference in quality of the playing fields when Newville joined ASA. “Having had the pleasure to participate in the NCAA College World Series 12 out of the last 13 years that the event has been held in Oklahoma City, I have seen a tremendous improvement in the facility this past year,” said Candrea of Hall of Fame Stadium. “The playing surface was superb and the credit needs to go to Rick Newville and his staff. This past year, it was obvious to all that attended that Hall of Fame Stadium had gone through a complete make over and looked absolutely beautiful. The playing surface was 100% better and Rick’s passion was even obvious on the practice fields.” ASA Hall of Fame Stadium will be featured in the 2006 SPORTSTURF Magazine, along with other winners. Award winners and fields can also be viewed at www.sportsturfmanager.org. ----------------------------------------------- Louisville Slugger’s FPC305 Catalyst Bat Added to ASA’s Non Approved List ----------------------------------------------- The Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA), the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, today announced that the fast pitch softball bat model FPC305 Catalyst manufactured by the Hillerich & Bradsby Co., Inc. (DBA Louisville Slugger) is no longer authorized for use in ASA Championship Play. Other governing bodies that currently use ASA’s bat performance standards such as the NCAA, NFHS, NAIA, NJCAA will continue to use the ASA’s non approved bat list and restrict such bats in 2006 and beyond. “We are disappointed with the situation but understand that our contract with the ASA requires a bat to be placed on the ASA Non Approved list no matter how little it is found out of compliance”, said Marty Archer, President of the Louisville Slugger Baseball/Softball division. “We acknowledge full responsibility for this situation. Please visit our website, www.slugger.com, to learn more about our efforts to deal with this situation.” ASA conducts random audit testing of various approved models throughout each calendar year to verify that the manufacturers’ bat models comply with the standards currently in effect. It was through this auditing process, that it was discovered that the FPC 305 Catalyst failed to comply with the ASA Bat Performance Standard. Note: that this action only affects the FPC305 Catalyst (-8) fast pitch model configured in length/weight ratios of 32/24, 33/25, and 34/26, and does not affect the FPC205 Catalyst (-10) fast pitch or SB206 Catalyst slow pitch models, both of which remain legal for use in ASA Championship Play. The ASA is currently not aware of any other bat models that fail to comply with the bat performance standards but will continue to audit bats on an on-going basis to verify compliance. In order to gain initial certification and have the right to use the ASA 2004 bat certification mark, bat manufacturers send production samples to independent ASA approved testing labs. Once the sample bat passes the performance test at one of the independent labs, the manufacturer has the authority to apply the ASA 2004 bat certification mark indicating compliance with the standard. It is the responsibility of the bat manufacturer to ensure that every unit of each model produced passes the test at any point during the lifespan of the bat. ----------------------------------------------- CLASSIFIED ADS ----------------------------------------------- http://www.softballtoday.com/ ********* http://www.asafundraising.com/php/pages/free_sample_kit/freekit.php ********* http://www.digitalscout.com/ ********* http://www.demarini.com/cas/index.html ********* http://www.diamond-sports.com/ ********* http://baseball.eastonsports.com/index2 ----------------------------------------------- Subscriber Management / Contact Information ----------------------------------------------- Copyright 2004 – New York State ASA.
