Clintons Recognized by ASA
By Mike McCrobie
Public Relations Director, New York ASA

It is said that one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch. When it comes to softball, there's no such thing as a bad apple or a bad season for the Bad Apples! Bob and Carol Clinton's "bunch," the 2006 18 Under Bad Apples, have been recognized as Team of the Year by The Amateur Softball Association District 3.

The Clintons are fixtures on the ASA scene in the Southern Tier. First with the Aapco Diamonds, and since 1993 they have been at the helm of the Bad Apples. In that time, they have appeared in 17 consecutive ASA National Tournaments. The '06 edition of the squad sported a 27-14-3 record including being thirteenth in the country from a field of 148 teams at the ASA Championships in Owensboro, KY and ninth place (out of 166 teams) at the Colorado Fireworks Tournament in Aurora, CO.

What makes the Bad Apples go is the Clinton philosophy. "We're about giving young kids a chance," stated a proud Bob Clinton. "It's rewarding watching a kid develop and grow with the game," he added.  Bob and Carol should know. They have gone through the cycle of ASA age-group softball three times. Each time, starting with a fresh group of twelve year-old players and taking them through the 18-Under nationals and the college recruiting process years later. This year's Bad Apples have two players who have been with the Clintons for over six years. Colgate-bound Nicole Siedhof and Colleen Ryan (committed to Stony Brook) are among what Bob calls the "hundreds of kids" that have come through the program, many of whom have received an education due, in part, to softball and involvement with the Bad Apples. According to Clinton, 9 or 10 of the 2006 Bad Apples have committed to colleges and received scholarship money.

The Clintons were humbled by the recognition as Team of the Year. "It's nice to be recognized. We were pleasantly surprised. The girls work very hard," Bob stated. According to ASA District 3 Commissioner Gary Williams, the decision to name the Bad Apples Team of the Year was an easy one. "Not only are they well-known in the area, but have become a team to be reckoned with at the national level," Williams said. "They are finally getting their just rewards," he added.  With this year's team receiving the Team of the Year honor, one might wonder if it's time for the Clintons to step aside and move on to the next stage of their lives. But that couldn't be further from the truth. "People have asked me if it?s time to retire, but I'm not ready yet. I guess it's time to go back to 12-under and start over again," he said.

It's impossible to briefly summarize a career of softball memories in just a few words, but Bob and Carol Clinton said it best. "Coaching the Bad Apples has been such a great ride."
